Litter training your hedgehog
From experience, I can tell you that litter training is awesome for so many reasons. It is easy, cheap, reduces the risk of mite infestation (because you no longer need to use wood shavings/bedding which can transmit the pesky critters), and it greatly reduces the smell. So how do you do it? Here's how we do it at Pins & Needles:
1. Purchase a rodent litter pan (click here to see the one's we use and sell with our cage setups)and fill it with either recycled newspaper pellets or pine pellets.
2. We use fleece liners on the bottom of our hedgehog cages. Fleece liners work great because they are absorbent, easy to make, easy to clean, and reusable. Put the litter pan in the corner of the cage on top of the fleece, and fill the litter box with pine or newspaper pellets.
3. The first couple of times your hedgehog poops outside of their litter pan, you are going to want to scoop it up and place it in the litter pan. Give him/her a few weeks, and they gradually should get the concept that "hey, this is where I should go potty"! I try to treat my pet's as I would want to be treated, and I am sure you would agree that you would rather have a designated place to go potty ;)
4. Be patient and persistent! Some of them will prefer to potty in one area, try to place the litter pan where they potty.
